George: Saturday, 30SEP’17 – Kerrville, TX to Johnson City, TX

Today was a great day to ride a bicycle. As I write this blog from the upper deck overlooking the tranquil grounds of the New Life Farm B&B, the guineas are strutting out in the yard, the cats are slinking after floating cottonwood balls, and the garden plants are swaying in the gentle breeze.

Susan and Sara are in town shopping while I cleaned up, shaved and began writing my daily blog. Moments ago I spoke with my brother about the happenings while I have been disconnected from practically everything but the pavement out in front of me day after day.

Kerrville and south central Texas have been inundated with rain for the last five days. In order to maintain a schedule consistent with the original plan, we moved east, rode for two days and we have now returned to ride this and another leg tomorrow. We did a lot of stopping today since the ride was short. Our first stop was at the post office in Hye, TX. Don’t let the label fool you. The post office, as it is affectionately known in these parts, is in fact a post office with a restaurant attached. Seeming out of place in Texas Hill Country, the deli like eatery has some pretty classy servings and Chicago prices to match. Susan bought some humus, naan, and a container of chunky potato salad. Afterward, we headed for Kuhlman Cellars for a wine tasting. Chris was our server and the owner of this newly minted winery. This Texas transplant from Oklahoma bought the plot of ground in 2014 and is just now harvesting grapes. After a false start ten years ago on a different plot of ground nearby, Chris is again trying this wine thing part time with the thought of continuing his efforts after he retires. He does love his adjunct work.

Tomorrow’s route is still in the incubator. The three of us will make a final decision before we retire for the night. Stay tuned.
