George: Thursday, 5OCT’17 – Livonia, LA to Amite City, LA

What a great day to be cycling through East Louisiana. We got an early start for what was going to be our third consecutive long ride. The early start was aided by the fact that there were no restaurants in the area, so we ate breakfast from our food supply. The traffic at the beginning and at the end was heavy. The morning drivers were courteous; the afternoon drivers were aggressive.

The ride today was one of the best of the tour. The list of highways and roads we used could fill an atlas. Almost all of them were four-digit LA highways with minimal traffic. We did see quite a few logging trucks, but the drivers were exemplary. Ten miles out of Livonia brought us to the classy town of New Roads with its white picket fences and manicured lawns. It lies along a backwater estuary of the Mississippi, but it looks like the main channel. We were out of there in good order heading north to LA 10. A right turn and 5 miles would have us at the bridge crossing the Mighty Mississippi. From that junction, five miles away and looking east, we saw two towers rising from the trees. Route 10 curled its way toward the towers finally revealing a suspension bridge in the style of Cincinnati’s John Roebling Bridge. What a beautiful start to a great ride. We met Susan at the 30-mile mark for a rest and to discussed the remaining stops and headed out for some great back road riding.

We have averaged nearly 90 miles for the last three days. Tomorrow’s ride is a short 49 miles, so it will be like a rest day. Unfortunately for us rain is forecast for the two days after tomorrow. We will have to work out details for how to work around all the precipitation. A couple of rest days might be in order. Stay tuned.
