George: Thursday, 12OCT’17 – Sneads, FL to Tallahassee, FL

It was a good day to be on the bike. Mostly it was good because with 57 miles to ride, we considered it a rest day. I have to tell you that as I write this, it was a fairly tough day with 1400 feet of climbing. The route, mind you, was flat except for a few major climbs, not the least of which were the ones in downtown Tallahassee itself. We met one of the steepest grades since leaving San Diego just east from the campus of Florida State University.

We were on US 90 for most of the route as it passed through Chattahoochee, Gretna and Quincy before arriving at the state capital. Last evening we ate dinner in Chattahoochee at a quaint, quirky, off-the-beaten-track restaurant. In fact, the décor made me feel as though I were at Eve’s Garden in Marathon, TX, having a meal. It was much like being in someone’s house. Chattahoochee has the requisite auto repair shop, filling station, pawnshop, and attorney’s office. It also has the State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. If an inmate were to escape to the north, the fence line is on the Georgia border. The buildings and the grounds are in immaculate condition.

Gretna was a rather insignificant wide spot in the road. Its only memory for us is that as we exited to the east on US 90, the berm vanished. For three miles, we were left to deal with 65 mph traffic competing to use the two lanes moving east. With Susan’s help, we dealt with the last half-mile before the berm returned to guide us into Tallahassee. Our troubles were not over as the traffic in town was heavy. There is a FSU game this weekend and many fans and alumni were arriving to enjoy the weekend of fun. I hope we get out of town safely tomorrow morning before people begin stirring.

We entered the Eastern Time Zone immediately upon leaving Sneads this morning. In fact, our phones kept bouncing back and forth between the two time zones all last evening. We have been in the Central Time Zone from Van Horn, TX to Sneads, FL, a distance of some 1300 miles. And, we have three days remaining with a total of 250 miles. We are looking forward to seeing the Atlantic Ocean and if all goes well, celebrating on Sunday afternoon. Stay tuned.

Heading into Tallahassee on US 90
