Sara: Day 36

Today we rode clear across the great state of Alabama. No, actually just the nub at the bottom, but the important part is: WE’RE IN FLORIDA!!

It was a great 64 mile ride from Dauphin Island to Pensacola. We set out for the ferry from Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan at 7am this morning. We’ve been looking forward to this day for a while, so were disappointed to find the ferry still out of order from the hurricane. We were also disappointed by the heavy rain. The weather finally caught us. Or so we thought.

By the time we got to Fort Morgan, 2.5 hours and one McDonald’s breakfast later, the weather had cleared and the tailwind had returned, turning it into a pretty decent, albeit humid, Columbus Day. The majority of the day was beachfront riding, so we had our fill of sand-swept (and flooded) roads, brightly colored real estate, ubiquitous seafood restaurants, and tacky surf shops. I marvel at how much things have changed since we were pedaling through the desolate, dusty desert just a couple of weeks ago. One thing that’s not changed – the heat. You’ve got to love that thick coastal air.
