George: Thursday, 28SEP’17 – Bastrop, TX to Navasota, TX

It was a great day to ride a bicycle. Sara and I were firing on all cylinders. Each of us was well rested. In particular, I had two rest days and two 40-mile days to show for the last few days. Let me share the details with you.

We ate a complimentary breakfast and left the hotel parking lot at 7:45. The forecast for Bastrop was for rain beginning around 10:00am. We had to make tracks, and we did, leaving town on SR 21. The four-lane road was not very busy and we took over the right lane. The local drivers were very kind to us and we were thankful. Shortly, we arrived at Paige, TX and the junction with US290. After a right hand turn we were heading east, toward Giddings, riding on wide, clean, smooth berms.

East of Giddings is the quaint Texas town of Brenham. We left US 290 entering Brenham on Bus. 290, passing neatly kept houses until we arrived at the historic downtown. We passed an ice cream shop that was beckoning us, but Susan had found an ideal (unlucky for us) parking spot on the east end of downtown. No ice cream today! We rested and had a banquet before exiting into the hot, muggy afternoon with 28 miles of road in front of us. The clouds were darkening behind and to our right. We were heading toward Navasota and blue skies at a good clip and I figured that we would be in Navasota before the rain. About five miles from town, we got a quick shower lasting 5 minutes. We rolled into Navasota 77 miles and 7 hours after leaving Bastrop.

Tomorrow we have another long day of 82 miles riding to Livingston, TX. I am looking forward to riding on country roads for the entire day. Stay tuned.

Caught in the rain, briefly, heading into Navasota
