It was a good day to ride a bicycle. It all began with
breakfast for me at 8:00am having my biggest one to date. I met Sara and Mike
and Susan at 9:45 for their breakfast. Mike was packed and ready to drive to
San Antonio for a plane ride to Chicago and a day of work. All this while a
steady rain dampened the driveway but not our spirits.
We left the parking lot
shortly after 10:00 driving 40 miles to the Johnson Ranch where we unloaded the
bicycles into a slight drizzle. We had a 17-mile leg on SR334 and then a 23-mile
leg on SR 55 into Camp Wood.
The rain continued for most of the first leg easing up
as we approached SR55. That highway was busier than I expected it to be since
it went from nowheresville to nothingtown. The surface on SR55 was pitch and
tar, much like the rest of the roads we have ridden since entering Texas. This
has been a major disappointment for me since 1/3 of this tour is in this state.
The scenery was exceptional starting out rolling with
hills in the distance. As we progressed northeast the road took us into those
far away hills. Soon we climbed and descended one after the other until we
reached SR55. From there the road was relatively flat with hills surrounding
us. Near Camp Wood we crossed the Nueces River where we stopped for a photo op
in spite of the rain and distant thunder. Finally we saw the telltale signs of
the town when the water and cell towers came into view.
Tomorrow we are back on the regular plan with an
80-mile ride into Kerrville, the expected thunderstorms not withstanding. A
Google search of Kerrville may surprise you. Stay tuned.
