Sara: Day 24

Today was a fun day despite another rocky start. We woke up at 6 to heavy rain and spent the first hour of the morning having an animated discussion regarding our plans for the next several days. A couple members of the party wanted to drive beyond the rain to Bastrop, two scheduled stops away, and write off the two days of riding. The other wants to ride her damn bike across the whole country.

We’ve been riding in rain the last 3 days and the weather has gotten worse each day. Thunderstorms and flash flood warnings are in the forecast for Kerrville (our morning location) and Dripping Springs (our evening location) until Saturday. We weren’t going to ride in the heavy rain today but we didn’t want to risk losing 2-3 days of riding only halfway through the trip while we waited it out. We also didn’t want to subject ourselves to 2-3 more days of Kerrville – they don’t even have an Olive Garden. Ultimately, we agreed to take a day off, drive east beyond the rain to Bastrop, ride our planned routes from Bastrop and Navasota on Thursday and Friday, then drive back to Kerrville on Friday evening to pick up our missed rides over the weekend once the weather had cleared. I think my parents are hoping I forget about this backtracking plan…

The drive today was very enjoyable. We drove from Kerrville to Dripping Springs along our bike route, which took us by countless wineries. I was particularly intrigued by “Fat Ass Ranch & Winery”. Johnson City, about 60 miles in, was so adorable we decided to come back for lunch after we checked out the rest of the route to Dripping Springs. The drive from Johnson City to Dripping Springs was just gorgeous – similar terrain and vegetation to the last couple of days, but a few added mansions and wineries for our viewing pleasure. The road did take us across a single lane bridge that was already flooded, so we’re planning to adjust the route a bit to avoid the bridge when we come through on bikes. Back in Jackson City, we had a great lunch at a charming little cafĂ© and managed to get in some shopping. I am starting to feel like myself again!

We deviated from the bike route and got back on the interstate for the drive from Dripping Springs to Bastrop, but it was still pretty entertaining. We saw billboards for the “Cleanest Water Park in Texas” (not sure why you’d want to draw attention to cleanliness in any water park setting…) and Buc-EE’s (the “convenience store of the gods”) “Beaver Nuggets”.  Upon googling said nuggets, they actually sound quite delicious. Fortunately it sounds like we’ll have a lot more Buc-EEs in our Texas future, so will have ample opportunity to try these Beaver Nuggets. We also squeezed in a Walmart run so I could pick up a shirt in the “safety yellow” color to match my dad’s. #twinsies

So it turned out to be a great day and it’s, fingers crossed, back to the grind tomorrow with a string of 80+ mile days and a return of the heat!

Wet start to our rest day
