Gah, I spoke too soon about the
motels. The Holiday Inn Express in Live Oak was full, so the Quality Inn it is
for one more night, a motel which has snagged a spot in our bottom 5 motel
experiences of the trip.
We stayed in a brand new
SpringHill Suites last night with a big, modern room and the best free hotel
breakfast yet. This morning I was comfortable, tired, and really didn’t want to
get on the bike for the 86 mile, hot, humid, hilly ride from Tallahassee to Live Oak.
But, it ended up being a pretty good day once I pulled it together. It’s
amazing how your attitude changes when your butt hits the seat and you accept
this is what you’re doing for the next 8 hours.
Out of town we were back on US 90
for the day. The route took us through Monticello, a lovely little town with a beautiful,
old courthouse at the center, Greenville, the childhood home of Ray Charles, Lee,
a self-declared “little but proud” town, and into Live Oaks, a bigger and more charming
town than we expected. The road was lined with live oak trees draped in Spanish
moss nearly the whole way, making it a really beautiful (and shady!) ride.
Rest stop in Greenville, FL |
Heading into Live Oak, we found the best house/yard combo of the whole trip! |
