Sara: Day 9

Today’s ride from Globe to Thatcher was my least favorite of the trip.

We started the ride on a road with more traffic than expected and a glass-littered shoulder (when there was a shoulder to speak of) and we ended the ride on a road with more traffic than expected and a glass-littered shoulder. With no notable differences to report in between. Rumble strips separated the road (traffic) and the shoulder (glass) the entire 78 miles, so there was no choice but to ride over them as we tried to navigate the steady stream of obstacles along the route. We must have passed over that unrelenting strip of cement 100 times during the ride. It was physically unpleasant and mentally exhausting.

I got 2 flats in the first 18 miles today, which really set the tone for the ride. I thought my dad was going to ditch me after the second flat – it’s always a bad sign when he gets quiet. But we slogged on and eventually made it to Thatcher. We were lucky to find a bike shop in town so we could replenish our tubes, although I’ve become pretty adept at patching holes.

Here’s to hoping tomorrow’s ride – along US 70, the same road from today – is better.

Caught the "Black Oasis" on the GoPro!
