We had a good time on the bicycle today. It was to be
a short 50-mile rest day, but as luck would have it, we traveled north with the
wind in our face. We traveled south with a headwind. And we traveled mostly
east kissing that 10 mph wind. No matter which direction we headed, the fickle
wind found us. It has been a frustrating week of constant headwinds, but when
the wind occasionally dies down, we have a lot of spring in our legs.
Today’s ride was rolling through a fairly well
populated area of eastern Louisiana, reminding me of Fagin Run and 12 Mile
Roads near New Richmond. The berm was wide and smooth on both SR 16 and SR 10
making me feel safe enough to only use my mirror occasionally. We met Susan
only once today. As we approached Franklinton, Sara spotted the golden arches
above the tree line. She said, “I’ll bet mom is in there.” Sure enough, so as
not to miss her, St. Susan came out to the road flagging us down. We ate a bite
and rested for 20 minutes before saddling up for the last 22 miles.
You may have been reading that tropical storm Nate is
bearing down on the gulf coast states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. We
have been following the storm with more interest than usual since several towns
on our route are centered in the projected path of the storm. To add to our
woes, Nate might be a category one hurricane when it strikes. Considering all
of the above, we are making tentative plans for the next 2-3 days knowing that
we might have to change them due to flooding, wind damage, power outages, etc. Stay
tuned.
